Escape artist. Art is escape. When the world shut down in March of 2020, I had nothing but time. Time to think about health and mortality. Time to explore aspects of life that had taken a back seat to daily routine. Time to check in on friends and family that I should have been checking in on more under normal circumstances. The Zoom sessions with Ryan, Ray, Gary, and Kev, and other friends and family around the world, kept me sane.

I used to make music. But life happens, and over the years, music took a back seat to work, coaching (I coach high school basketball), paying bills, etc… "Shelter in place" meant being locked-in to a lot of people. I felt locked in, locked down. But with all this time on my hand that I haven’t had in years, I began to see it as an indefinite 3-day weekend to make music. Tomorrow became today. These songs allowed me to reflect, wander, and venture. Viewing the cup as half full during a time of uncertainty and duress was an escape. Coasting on empty freeways that were normally crowded with Bay Area traffic, taking the long way home was an escape. Visiting loved ones, even though it was from a distance, was an escape.
